Sunderland manager Jack Ross says youngster Denver Hume has flourished in a new era on Wearside

Sunderland youngster Denver Hume has impressed in his few first-team appearances so far this season, despite playing in an unnatural position.

Hume was one of Sunderland’s biggest positives from their Checkatrade Trophy win on penalties against Stoke City Under-21’s.

And in an interview with the Chronicle, Sunderland manager Jack Ross says the youngster has flourished in a new era on Wearside.

When speaking about Hume’s progression so far this term, Ross said: “I’ve been really pleased with him all through pre-season and into the season, he has been one who adapted to how we train and how we do things and he has flourished under it.

“I’ve got a bit of sympathy for him in that in the two games he has played, he has had to come on and play on his wrong side. But hopefully that shows that I trust him.”

Hume scored the winning penalty that earned Sunderland an extra point in their Checkatrade Trophy group and impressed throughout at right-back.

The 22-year-old also caught the eye of the Sunderland faithful in their 2-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup last month and is certainly a versatile option for 42-year-old Ross at full-back this campaign.
