Elliot Embleton and Denver Hume both made their first senior starts against Sheffield Wednesday in midweek.

Young Sunderland duo Elliot Embleton and Denver Hume made their first senior starts in a Sunderland shirt in the Black Cats’ 2-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.
Both players certainly didn’t disgrace themselves against an accomplished Championship side. However, speaking to the Chronicle, Sunderland manager Jack Ross hinted that the two young players could depart the club on loan this month to gain more valuable first-team experience.
Ross when asked about the possibility of the pair leaving on loan said: “I think you can see that some of those players need to play in that kind of competitive environment and not go back into U23 football.
“Circumstances have made it possibly more opportune for the young players now, they are undoubtedly good players and I have been really encouraged with what I’ve seen.” Ross added.

Both men looked at home at the Stadium of Light. Hume looked an accomplished player despite his age, especially given he was played out of his natural left-back position.
Embleton has proven his quality in his England youth career and has even been nominated alongside Cristiano Ronaldo for UEFA goal of the year – with his stunning effort in the Under-19 European Championships.
Sunderland’s manager will have less than 2 weeks to decide the pair’s fate, with the loan window set to shut at the end of August.
