Sunderland are lacking a versatile central defender in their League One squad.
Sunderland made several good additions to their League One side this summer and their early-season unbeaten form is testament to their good recruitment.
Manager Jack Ross signed some impressive defenders in Jack Baldwin and Glenn Loovens, but the Black Cats still lack a versatile defender who can play both centrally and out wide.
However, after giving a trial to defender Gael Andonian recently, Ross admits the Armenian would be signed purely as cover in an interview with the Sunderland Echo.
When speaking about the prospect of signing the former Marseille man, Ross said: “It’ll be something for the club to look at as a whole, there’s attraction because of the attributes I’ve mentioned, but it would very much be to give us another option rather than him coming in as someone to drop straight into the team.”
The former Marseille player turned out for Elliot Dickman’s Sunderland Under-23 side in midweek in their 2-1 win over West Brom.
“He’s got a decent pedigree and is a free agent. I thought he did fine because he’d trained well with us but only really had one day with the 23’s and it’s a different game,” Ross added.
Sunderland’s Scottish manager will be keen to take his time on the move, with the squad morale on Wearside at an all-time high after the team’s unbeaten start to life in League One.
Ross’s side play host to Fleetwood Town on Saturday afternoon and Sunderland could welcome the likes of Loovens and Tom Flanagan back into the heart of defence.
