Sunderland have had an impressive season so far, with Jack Ross guiding his side to second in League One after 16 matches, 30 years after their last appearance in the third tier.

The Black Cats are currently on a winning run which has stretched to five matches in the league and key to that has been their impressive wide men – with Aiden McGeady, Chris Maguire and Lynden Gooch all in great form.

At the start of the campaign, it was young talisman Josh Maja who was carrying his side, scoring nine goals – but both he and his teammate Jerome Sinclair are now without a goal in five matches, highlighting a clear striker problem.

Republic of Ireland international McGeady has three goals in two matches, whilst the ever-impressive Maguire has two in his last three – but without those goals the former Premier League regulars would’ve no doubt struggled.

Maja had looked devastating after 10 matches, whilst Sinclair hasn’t cut it all season, scoring just once, but now neither player is firing and that is a problem which has to be rectified ahead of a hectic winter schedule.

Both McGeady and Maguire have been excellent, whilst Gooch has been immense having made seven assists – but in order to succeed this season, Sunderland need a consistent striker.

Perhaps 42-year-old Ross may be forced into finding a forward to take the pressure off the young shoulders of Maja and loanee Sinclair in the January transfer window.

Regardless, the Scot must find a solution and fast, assuming both of Sunderland’s in-form wide men won’t be able to keep this scoring form up all season.
