Sunderland got their League One season off to a flyer when they beat Charlton Athletic on Saturday lunchtime.
Sunderland snatched all three points in the dying seconds of Saturday’s League One opening game against Charlton Athletic, winning the game 2-1 thanks to Lynden Gooch.
Black Cats manager Jack Ross fielded five of their new summer signings, many of which impressed on their home debut at the Stadium of Light.
However, it wasn’t only the new arrivals who caught the eye of the Sunderland faithful, with full-back Bryan Oviedo showing exactly why the Wearside club should keep him for life in the third tier.
The 28-year-old came on as a substitute for Donald Love in the first half, with the former Manchester United full-back having left the field with what looked like a leg injury.
Oviedo looked solid defensively up to the interval, but was required as a more attacking full-back when 42-year-old Ross changed the formation to three defenders in the second period.
The Costa Rican defender served up a perfect cross for new boy Jerome Sinclair early on after the interval, but the on-loan striker failed to convert.
However, it was Oviedo’s part in the winning goal which showed the Sunderland fans exactly why he should remain with the League One club, when he whipped a phenomenal cross on to the head of the American midfielder, who happily nodded home with just seconds to spare.
The rumours that suggested Oviedo would leave were mainly down to the defender currently earning one of the highest wages with Sunderland.
But, if Oviedo repeats what he did on Saturday on several other occasions for Sunderland, the former Copenhagen player will be worth every penny of his higher wage.
