The Sunderland midfielder has come under scrutiny from Black Cats fans, who have taken to social media to voice their annoyance.

Lee Cattermole of Sunderland looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Birmingham City and Sunderland at St Andrews on January 30, 2018 in Birmingham, England.

Sunderland have made a poor start in their two opening pre-season fixtures, losing 1-0 to Darlington and only recently drawing 1-1 with Hartlepool United.

The Black Cats will kick-off a League One campaign this coming season for the first time in 30 years, and new manager Jack Ross will be hoping to have a successful pre-season to hopefully set-up a promotion challenge.

And despite equalising late on against Hartlepool, a section of Sunderland fans aren’t happy with Lee Cattermole for his performance against Pools and have taken to social media to voice their views.

Cattermole is one of Sunderland’s longest serving players, having played 203 games for the Wearsider’s and scoring three goals from his midfield role.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed a number of lows and some high’s in the infamous red and white colours of Sunderland, but after back-to-back relegations, some of the Sunderland faithful believe his time is up.

The former Middlesbrough and Wigan Athletic midfielder came under a lot of scrutiny in Sunderland’s dismal Championship campaign last season, and as one of the highest earners on the club;s books, there has been speculation among fans that the midfielder may soon be departing from the League One side.

Cattermole’s 66 minutes against Sunderland’s regular pre-season opponents ended when he was substituted for Ethan Robson, a youngster who fans on Wearside expect to break through into the side next season.

And with Sunderland’s number 6 having now been on Wearside for almost ten years, suggestions are that many of the younger central midfield prospects, including George Honeyman and Lynden Gooch, could be the players at the heart of the club’s future.

And certain sections of the 2233 who travelled to Victoria Park to watch their side draw with the National League side have certainly not been shy in voicing their views on Cattermole’s performance.
