Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has made it clear signings must be made for the Black Cats academy, with Millar being a player who would fit into that setup.
Over the last month, Sunderland have began to make strides in the summer transfer window in preparation for what will be a pivotal season in their history in League One next term.
New Black Cats owner Stewart Donald had previously suggested that signings would be made for not only the Sunderland first team but also for the future, with deals being done for their highly credible academy setup.
And reports from the Sunderland Echo are suggesting that 18-year-old Liverpool forward Liam Millar will be next through the door to bolster Elliot Dickman’s Under-23 setup.
Millar’s pending arrival will follow on from the arrival’s of former Liverpool player Jordan Hunter and former Everton and Swansea City defender Jack Bainbridge, both who will know Millar well from their time playing in Premier League 2.
The 18-year-old from Canada, who made his first international cap back in March against New Zealand, finished last season as Liverpool Academy’s top goalscorer.
Millar netted 19 goals for Liverpool’s Under-18 and Under-19 sides and found himself playing as both a winger and central attacker, with his versatility as a forward showing perhaps why Sunderland are vowing for his signature.
Millar will be hoping to emulate some of Sunderland’s former academy players, with two of England’s current World Cup players in Jordan Pickford and Jordan Henderson currently flying the red and white flag out in Russia.
Pickford has continued to make headlines out in Russia with his outstanding goalkeeper heroics, one of which came in a penalty shootout against Colombia in the round of 16 game.
Another Academy graduate has also been making the headlines for the right reasons with a number of eye catching performances in England colours.
The Sunderland faithful may be even hopeful of Millar breaking into the first team in League One next season, with the player already a well-known prospect in England at just 18-years-old.
Millar will certainly be at the right place if he was to join Sunderland, with many of the current first team having come through the ranks of the Black Cats academy.
However, in order to break through on Wearside, Millar will have to hit the ground running instantly, with a number of young strikers already on the books of the Sunderland academy.
Although with the departure of Joel Asoro to Swansea and 42-year-old Ross’s clear want to include youth in the first team squad, Millar has every chance of making it at Sunderland.
