And, after years of waiting for a young player to break onto the Tyneside scene, Sean Longstaff may be the next academy graduate in waiting and could even be a hidden gem for Newcastle this term.
Longstaff’s most impressive display this campaign came in Newcastle’s Under-23 win over Doncaster in the Checkatrade Trophy, with the 20-year-old bossing the midfield and shutting out some accomplished League One players.
His best attributes are his ability to hold off players, run with the ball from central midfield and find creative players with his long-range passing.
The Newcastle youngster has had to work hard for his prospect status, with Longstaff having been out on loan at Scottish side Kilmarnock and at Blackpool, where he impressed throughout.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez will be keen to keep a close eye on the midfielder, especially as the Magpies’ Premier League campaign rolls on.
Newcastle’s central midfield is arguably one of their stronger areas on the pitch, but Longstaff could provide competition for places, as well as playing his part in certain games this season.
