The Northern Ireland international had an excellent season for the Black Cats last term, impressing in the second tier despite his former side ending the season in the relegation zone.
But after eight games as a Middlesbrough player and the 23-year-old yet to start in the Championship, McNair might be regretting joining Tony Pulis’ side.
McNair has started in Middlesbrough’s two successful Carabao Cup matches and has also featured from the bench this term.
But despite impressing in the games the former Manchester United man has featured in so far this season, the midfielder is yet to be awarded a justified starting place.
George Saville, Adam Clayton, Muhamed Besic, Lewis Wing and Jonny Howson are all seemingly above McNair in the midfield pecking order, all of which have started in Middlesbrough’s Championship campaign.
McNair scored some excellent goals last season for the Boro’s local rivals, the best of which came away to Reading in a 2-2 draw in the league.
And if the youngster doesn’t get his chance to shine in Pulis’ side soon, the right option could be to force a move in the January transfer window to ensure his career doesn’t go stale.
