Middlesbrough hoped to bring in one or two central midfielders on transfer deadline day to bolster their squad options for the rest of the Championship season.

Middlesbrough have had an up and down summer, with some exciting arrivals through the door, but also some key players leaving for other clubs.
Tony Pulis’ side lost a fan favourite at Middlesbrough to Premier League side Wolves when youngster Adama Traore swapped Teeside for the Midlands.
And the bad news for the Boro faithful doesn’t stop there, with the transfer for Muhamed Besic having fallen through only an hour before the transfer window closed, and Middlesbrough fans have taken to social media to react to the news.
Middlesbrough had the hard part out of the way when they had a bid of £6m accepted by Everton, but after the 25-year-old travelled to Teeside, Besic failed to agree terms with the Championship side.
The former Hamburger SV midfielder played his football with Middlesbrough last year, when he joined on loan and played 15 games.
The Bosnian was part of the side that reached the Championship play-off semi final’s with the Boro and had even scored one goal from his defensive midfield position.

However, despite a reasonably successful season with the former Premier League side, agent fee’s were reportedly the stumbling block which caused talks to break down.
Middlesbrough have made a good start to their Championship campaign, drawing away to Millwall and winning 3-0 only recently at home to Sheffield United.
However, 60-year-old Pulis won’t be complacent and will be keen to fill the void that Besic was supposed to fill before the transfer for the Everton player collapsed.
