Josh Maja is one of the rising stars in English football and despite currently applying his trade in League One with Sunderland, the 19-year-old has attracted attention from clubs in higher leagues as of late.

The academy graduate has bagged 10 goals in the third-tier this term and the Wearside faithful will be desperate for the striker to remain in the North-East – but Maja continues to be linked with a move elsewhere.

Despite a lot of speculation ahead of the January transfer window, manager Jack Ross says he believes his young striker will see out his current contract in an interview with the Sunderland Echo.

When speaking about the speculation surround Maja, Ross said: “I still believe he (Maja) will be at the club beyond his current contract. Obviously there will be certain elements that are out of my control.

“If there was an offer that came that the club believed they couldn’t turn down, it’s very different. At the moment, the conversations I’ve had with Josh, I know he’s happy, enjoys it, I think he believes it’s an environment where he can improve.”

The Lewisham-born man would be a huge miss in the Black Cats side if he was to move to a different club, with the next best goal-scorer in the Sunderland side being Chris Maguire – who has five goals less than Maja.

It wouldn’t be unfair to suggest the former Premier League side wouldn’t be in their healthy position of second in the League One table had they not had the goals of Maja – which is more than enough evidence to suggest Sunderland have to do everything they can to keep their star striker.
