Sunderland were reportedly keen on taking Manchester United striker James Wilson on loan before the window shuts at the end of this month.

Sunderland were reportedly keen on signing Manchester United striker James Wilson on loan earlier this week in order to bolster their attacking options.

Jack Ross’s side are heavily reliant on 19-year-old Josh Maja at the moment, with Charlie Wyke, Jerome Sinclair and Duncan Watmore all sidelined.

However, Sunderland’s manager has admitted to the Chronicle that there’s nothing in the reports at the moment, and that a move for the youngster is some way off.

Wilson would certainly add some quality to the Black Cats forward line, and after three unsuccessful loan spells with Brighton and Hove Albion, Derby County and Sheffield United, the youngster will be looking to get his career back on track.

As Ross has played down speculation of a potential move for the Biddulph-born striker, however, Sunderland may be forced to explore other loan options this month.

Ross told the Chronicle about Wilson: “There are a lot of players we have looked at and assessed but these players also have other options in terms of where they might go.

“He’s certainly one who we have been aware of but there’s nothing imminent. But I have said that before and things have changed quickly”.

Sunderland’s Josh Maja won’t mind his manager playing down talks of signing the player who is three years his senior, with the forward relishing life in League One after two goals in two starts.
