Sunderland winger Duncan Watmore has begun to train with the first-team once again after sustaining a second cruciate ligament injury in November last year.

The man known as the ‘Road Runner’ is a fan favourite on Wearside and the Sunderland faithful, as well as Jack Ross, will be keen to see Watmore return once fully fit.

And on the evidence of his displays in the Championship prior to being injured for the second time last term, Watmore will provide much-needed competition to the impressive Lynden Gooch and Chris Maguire once fully fit.

Summer arrival Maguire and academy graduate Gooch have been excellent this term, scoring three goals each in the first nine League One matches.

But with Aiden McGeady the only real source of competition, it will be important for Watmore to provide that extra healthy competitiveness in the wide areas for Sunderland.

Watmore has scored three goals in Sunderland colours, one of which came in an impressive 3-0 away win against Norwich City in the Premier League two seasons ago.

But it is the youngster’s persistent nature in running with the ball and pace in wide areas which makes him the perfect asset to Sunderland and the perfect competitor to the wing positions for two of Sunderland’s best performers this term.
