Sunderland winger Duncan Watmore is close to a return to the Black Cats first-team.
Sunderland forward Duncan Watmore returned to action this week for 25 minutes in a training friendly at the Academy of Light.
The 24-year-old suffered his second cruciate ligament injury half way through Sunderland’s dismal Championship campaign of last season, less than a year after the same injury occurred in the Premier League.
Watmore is slowly but surely closing in on his return to the Sunderland first-team and his return would be a welcomed one, bringing an excellent alternative to the current striker options in the Black Cats squad.
The Black Cats’ current striker options include 19-year-old Josh Maja and Watford loanee Jerome Sinclair, both of who’m have had contrasting seasons.
Sinclair has scored just one goal which came against Peterborough United in September, but the forward has ultimately struggled – whilst Maja has nine goals, but is also on a goal drought of five matches in all competitions.
And with summer arrival Charlie Wyke also out injured, Jack Ross is forced to rely on two out of form strikers at the moment and Sunderland wingers Aiden McGeady and Chris Maguire are the men currently scoring the goals.
But with Watmore’s return seemingly not far away, the former Altrincham man would certainly bring something different in attack once fit.
One thing the Wearside team have lacked in recent years is a forward with pace and Watmore certainly has that, along with the ability and flair to take on players – which would be a huge benefit to Sunderland up front.
