Sunderland’s George Honeyman has been linked with a move to the Championship.

Sunderland manager Jack Ross made young midfielder George Honeyman captain of his new side at the start of the League One campaign, but the 24-year-old is yet to make a huge impact and finds himself low in the pecking order.
Pressures of being captain of his boyhood club seem to be weighing heavy on Honeyman’s young shoulders, but according to the Chronicle, Championship side Sheffield United are impressed and are weighing up a bid for the player.
The central midfielder is arguably one of the best academy products who has broken into the first-team in recent years, but cashing in on Honeyman in January could be a smart move by Sunderland.
Like Honeyman, fellow Sunderland youngsters Josh Maja, Denver Hume and Lynden Gooch have all announced themselves on Wearside and have secured a place in Ross’ first-team this term.
But the Prudhoe-born player plays in one of the strongest areas of Sunderland’s current squad and impressive performers Lee Cattermole, Max Power and Dylan McGeouch are all clearly ahead of him in the pecking order.

The Sunderland skipper has had a couple of standout performances, with the best coming recently when he found the back of the opposition net against Southend United, making it three for the season.
But when 42-year-old Ross has a fully fit side on his hands in the coming months, Honeyman isn’t a likely starter and cashing in on the man from the North East may not please everyone, but could be a smart move going forward.
