West Ham have had the best transfer window so far but have dropped a costly clanger

Relatively speaking West Ham United have enjoyed the best transfer window in the Premier League so far this summer.

West Ham made a big statement when they splashed the cash to make Manuel Pellegrini their new manager.

The highest profile boss in the history of the club, and the only to have had a top flight league title on his CV, it have West Ham fans new hope after two torrid seasons since moving to the London Stadium.

Co-owner David Gold pledged on talkSPORT that he and fellow co-owner David Sullivan would be backing Pellegrini with unprecedented spending.

And they look as good as their word with five signings so far and another soon to be announced.

The excellent free transfers of Jack Wilshere and Ryan Fredericks have joined alongside Issa Diop for a fee rising to £25 million, Lukas Fabianski for £7 million and Andriy Yarmolenko for £17.5 million.

The Hammers are expected to take their spending past the £90 million mark with the record transfer of Brazilian star Felipe Anderson – as reported by Sky Sports – and Fabien Balbuena (The Sun).

While Liverpool have enjoyed an excellent window, their best bit of business – the capture of Naby Keita – was done last year.

So it is fair to say West Ham have had the best window so far.

But West Ham have dropped a big clanger in not acting quicker over duo Andy Carroll and Winston Reid.

The Hammers could have raised an additional £30 million by offloading the injury-prone stars this summer.

However the pair have once again suffered injuries which will rule both of them out for at least three months each, as reported on West Ham’s official website.

Once fit, the pair should be wrapped in cotton wool and as soon as the window opens in January West Ham must look to offload them to the highest bidder, if they can find one.

They may even get more for Carroll and Reid in the winter window as clubs are desperate for proven quality and are willing to take risks even on players with such terrible injury records.
