Djed Spence has told Football London that he has shared a chat with experienced Tottenham man Ivan Perisic behind the scenes – who told him to “be ready” and “hopefully” he will get a sustained run of games in the starting XI.
Spence, 21, has joined Tottenham after a summer-long saga of Spurs trying to agree a fee with Middlesbrough. It became clear that London-born Spence wanted to join Spurs, despite helping Nottingham Forest gain promotion.
The England Under-21 star will face competition from Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty for the right wing-back position. Doherty is well-liked by Antonio Conte, while Emerson is arguably first choice – but there are doubts.

Speaking to Football London following defeat to Roma in Israel, Spence said that he has had a chat with fellow new recruit Perisic. The Croatian has told him to train hard and be ready for a chance, and hopefully he stays in the side.
“I spoke to Ivan just then,” Spence said, when asked by Football London. “He told me my chance will come, just be ready, train hard, when you get your chance do well and hopefully you’ll stay in the team.”

Perisic is right. Spence might not start the season as first-choice right-back under Conte. But he will certainly get his chance. Whether that is as a rotational option, or in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
What is for sure, is that Spurs have now signed a third option for one position and a decision needs to be made. Do they keep Doherty or Emerson? The chances are, the latter could go. If so, it opens up more opportunities for Spence.
