Well, Eddie Nketiah might have given his Arsenal career a second wind.
Making only his second Premier League start of the season, Nketiah was the hero on Wednesday as the Gunners secured a massive 4-2 victory away to Chelsea.
Nketiah scored Arsenal’s first and third goals of a memorable night at Stamford Bridge which saw Mikel Arteta’s side reignite their Champions League qualification hopes.
The North Londoners, who are behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur on goal difference now, have a dilemma regarding Nketiah.
The 22-year-old is out of contract at Arsenal this summer and the player was vocal this week in saying that he felt as if he deserved more chances under Arteta, something that the Spanish manager agreed it when speaking before and after the Chelsea encounter.
It remains to be seen how highly Arteta rates him but, according to Lee Dixon, a certain Ian Wright is an admirer.
Wright, one of Arsenal’s greatest-ever goalscorers, believes that the young English hitman only needs chances and he’ll score goals.
Dixon said live on NBC Sport: “It’s a terrible mistake but he just chases lost causes. This is what Nketiah can do. He is a goalscorer. Ian Wright a big fan of his. He says give him a chance and he will score goals and this is a poacher’s goal.”
Too late?
You wonder if this comes too late for Arsenal in trying to keep him.
After scoring twice away to the European champions, Nketiah won’t be short on offers this summer and it would take a tremendous leap of faith on his part to stay in North London, knowing he could be easily riding a bench for most of next season, too.
After losing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and with Alexandre Lacazette also heading off this summer, the Emirates Stadium outfit are bound to spend big on a number nine this summer – and that fact might just make Nketiah want to leave for good, despite his heroics last night.
In all probability, the young striker is likely to be off.
