Divock Origi was expected to leave Liverpool for Premier League newcomers Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer transfer window.

Divock Origi’s decision to turn down a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer raised eyebrows up and down the country.

The Liverpool Echo reported that Wolves were ready to pay a club-record £22 million for the Belgian forward in August. But he rejected a move to the newly promoted club as he wanted to stay at Anfield.

At the time, that decision seemed a strange one. Origi appeared to be well down the pecking order, playing U23 football after spending the 2017/18 season out on loan, and struggling, at Wolfsburg.

But with 10 games left in the Premier League season, the former Lille man’s decision is looking justified for the first time.

The 23-year-old has started to prove himself as a key player in a Liverpool side who are chasing their first league title in three decades. After spending the first half of the season out of Klopp’s plans, a dramatic winner against Everton in December appears to have handed him a fresh start.

Since then, Origi has featured more and more regularly and scored a terrific goal in Wednesday’s 5-0 thrashing of Watford, standing in for the injured Roberto Firmino.

Now, Wolves have enjoyed a terrific season but if Origi is part of a legendary Liverpool team who end up lifting the Premier League trophy in May, his decision to stay will look like an inspired one.
