The Liverpool forward needs to do better after the international break.

When Liverpool signed Divock Origi from Lille back in 2014 it looked like they had bought a star in the making.

A surprise choice for Belgium’s World Cup squad, the then-19-year-old was making waves in Ligue 1 and tipped to ultimately take Anfield by storm.

Alas, three years on, Origi is yet to hit the heights many had predicted, and after spending the first year of his Liverpool deal on loan back at Lille, the forward has been deemed surplus to requirements, at least for the current campaign.

Currently at German club Wolfsburg, the 22-year-old needs to start scoring on a regular basis having only found the net once in five appearances to date.

He is certainly capable of more, and already has 21 goals and seven assists for Liverpool, with many of his 77 appearances coming from the bench.

However he is now at an age when he should be hitting the next level, not struggling to justify his inclusion in the starting XI.

Given the forward players currently at Liverpool’s disposal, Origi will understand the importance of making the most of his loan spell, because if there is no place for him this season, only a standout campaign in Germany will force Reds boss Jurgen Klopp to alter his thinking 12 months on.

The innate talent is certainly there, but Liverpool are only going to see the best of Origi if he accepts how important the next year could be.
