Everton fans have been reacting on Twitter after the Daily Mirror reported that the Toffees attempted to sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United during the January transfer window.

Speculation surrounding Rooney’s future has seemingly been rife for months, if not years, and the Mirror reported that a move to the Chinese Super League was seriously considered by the current England captain.

However, it seems that he had the opportunity to move elsewhere recently as the Mirror reports that Everton offered him the chance to return to Goodison Park 13 years after his departure, and are now considering whether to make another move for the forward in the summer.

Interestingly, the idea of the 31-year-old returning to Merseyside has received a mixed response from supporters. While his quality is undeniable and the Mirror’s suggestion that a summer exit out of Old Trafford is inevitable would suggest that he may be available for a decent price, most Toffees fans do not seem to be too interested in seeing Rooney return.

Despite becoming both England’s and Manchester United’s leading goalscorer in recent years, it is clear that Rooney is not quite the player he once was and it is difficult to see how he could get into Ronald Koeman’s side.

He certainly would not get into the team ahead of Romelu Lukaku, and the likes of Ross Barkley, Ademola Lookman and Tom Davies could be in danger of having their potential stifled should they end up having to battle Rooney for a place in the team.

However, if he is happy accepting more of a fringe role which allows him to work with the cluster of impressive youngsters coming through, then it would surely be a smart piece of business.

Here is the best of the reaction…
