This was because it was felt he was distracted, and too focused on the upcoming international matches.

He said: “Onyekuru is currently heading to Nigeria where he is going to debut at the national team.

“He has his head at the World Cup and was not ready to start at Club Brugge.”

Onyekuru is in his second season in Belgium, after playing for Eupen last year where he struck 22 goals.

Everton paid £7 million to sign him but loaned him out to Anderlecht as he was ineligible for a work permit.

He has benefited from featuring in the Champions League, and has scored six goals in 13 games in the Jupiler Pro League this season.

Everton will be able to forgive him the excitement about playing for Nigeria which led to him being dropped at club level, but they will expect a more mature approach by time he gets his opportunities at Goodison Park.
