Mark Lawrenson has said on BBC Radio 5 Live (8:27pm, April 11, 2021) that Arsenal winger Willian has been “distinctly average” this season.

The Liverpool legend made the comments about Willian during the Premier League game between Sheffield United and Arsenal on Sunday evening.

Willian did not start the match, but the former Chelsea star came on as a substitute in the 69th minute.

BBC Sport pundit Lawrenson was on co-commentary duty for the match, and he made it clear that he has not been impressed by the 32-year-old, who can also operate as an attacking midfielder.

Lawrenson said about Willian on BBC Radio 5 Live (8:27pm, April 11, 2021): “Distinctly average. I would imagine he is on an awful lot of money as well.”

Inconsistency

Willian has played well at times, especially in recent games, but overall, it has been a disappointing season for the Brazilian star.

The winger arrived at the Emirates Stadium as a free transfer last summer and was expected to be a huge success at the Gunners, especially as he was a star at Chelsea.

Things have not worked out that way for Willian, but there is no doubt that he is a very good player who can still do great things with Arsenal.

According to WhoScored, the winger has provided five assists in 22 Premier League matches and has provided two assists in seven Europa League games for the Gunners so far this season.
