Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has criticised Leeds United in The New York Times.
The England international believes that Leeds disrespected the Liverpool players when they put out the ‘Earn it’ T-shirts before the Premier League game at Elland Road in April.
Henderson told The New York Times: “The T-shirts, I felt, were disrespectful. The players hadn’t done anything. It wasn’t something we wanted..”
That week in April was all about the European Super League.
Liverpool had joined the breakaway group, and fans, not just of the Reds but of rival teams as well, were not happy at all with the project.
Before the match at Elland Road, Leeds put out T-shirts inside the Liverpool dressing room with the slogan ‘Earn it’.
It referred to the fact that teams have to earn the right to play in the Champions League instead of being in such a premier competition year after year.
It was against the idea of European Super League which would have seen the 12 founding members play season after season irrespective of where they finish in their respective domestic leagues.
Henderson was among the players who came out afterwards and made it clear that he was against the European Super League.
The project was quickly disbanded, and steps are now being taken to make sure that no such breakaway groups are formed again.
