Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard converted in more traditional fashion this time
Odsonne Edouard scored a second penalty in as many games on Saturday, but this one generated significantly less controversy.
The Frenchman’s perfectly executed Panenka put Celtic 2-0 up against Hearts in last Sunday’s Scottish Cup Fina at Hampden, but the flamboyant finish failed to impress former team-mate Craig Gordon.
The Hearts keeper responded by throwing the ball in Edouard’s direction, and pundit Neil McCann accused the striker of being ‘disrespectful’.
Speaking on BBC Sportsound, McCann said: “I can understand (Gordon’s) reaction. I think that’s pretty disrespectful.
“It’s come off for him and it looks brilliant. It’s just selfish. I didn’t like it. It’s not because Celtic have gone two-nil up. That’s his team-mate and that’s why Craig’s reacted like that.
“That was a little bit cheeky.”
When Edouard was handed the chance to put Celtic in front at New Douglas Park this weekend, he took a more traditional approach.
That led fellow former Hearts man Michael Stewart to aim a dig at McCann during Saturday night’s BBC Sportscene.
Analysing the action, Stewart said: “I think it’s a penalty kick. It’s a crucial moment, he does catch him.
“It’s a crucial moment because Neil Lennon is talking in the first half about how they knew if they continued the same way they’d be able to open them up.
“Slightly disrespectful to stick it right in the corner.”
After host Steven Thompson suggested Edouard could have taken another Panenka, McCann responded: “Disgrace. That’s a penalty. That’s how to take a penalty.”
Edouard could be in action again on Wednesday night as Celtic play host to Dundee United, in their final Premiership match before Saturday’s derby against Rangers at Ibrox.
