Some Liverpool fans have been reacting on social media to reports by the Mirror, that Mike Gordon and Michael Edwards are against handing Jordan Henderson a long-term contract.
The Reds’ co-owner and Sporting Director would prefer Henderson sees out the final two years of his current deal. And only once those terms expire do Gordon and Edwards want to open negotiations over a new, short-term deal for the Reds’ captain.
Jurgen Klopp is desperate for Henderson to commit his future to the Anfield club and avoid losing another pillar of his squad. The German has just watched Georginio Wijnaldum join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, having wanted the Dutchman to also extend his stay.

Klopp wants Liverpool to now back him during the final three years of his current contract to bring more trophies to Anfield. And he wants Henderson to be a part of that. The Reds boss trusts his skipper and relies on the England international to set the tone for the team.
But Liverpool chiefs Gordon and Edwards are refusing to sign off on Henderson’s demands for a long-term contract. He also wants the club to increase his salary to better reflect his standing, leaving talks stalled – potentially – indefinitely.
Edwards and Gordon would prefer Henderson sees out the last two years of his current £140,000-per-week contract. Then, in 2023, intend to sit down and discuss a short-term extension for the midfielder, who will then be 33.
Henderson ideally wants to stay at Liverpool and sign a new contract, but not on the current terms. The former Sunderland talent, signed for £20m in 2011, will even consider leaving for a club that will offer a long-term contract, if Gordon and Edwards continue to refuse.
Liverpool fans react to Henderson contract standoff
However, not all Liverpool fans would like to see Edwards and Gordon rush to hand Henderson a long-term extension. Instead, they agree with the club chiefs, as it makes greater sense for the club to hold off on any long-term commitments to an aging player.
They also note that the 31-year-old has two years left on his current terms. So, he has the time to prove to Gordon and Edwards that he can be an important player at Anfield for many more seasons to come.
But some Liverpool fans would like Henderson to sign a long-term contract as he deserves better after what he’s achieved. The 64-cap international led the Reds to the Champions League trophy in 2018/19, before claiming the Premier League title the season after.
