
Southampton may have lost 9-0 to Manchester United on Tuesday evening in one of the most remarkable games in Premier League history, but Arsenal fans who tuned into that game were only keen to talk about one thing after the final whistle.
Indeed, after the Gunners’ 2-1 loss to Wolves, officiating was a the top of their list when it comes to topics they wanted to discuss, and one incident in the Southampton game seems to have really riled up fans.
Jan Bednarek’s late red card for a challenge on Anthony Martial has left Arsenal fans unhappy for a multitude of reasons.
The main issue Gunners fans had with this incident was how similar it was to David Luiz’s red card against Wolves, and while both decisions were the same, Arsenal supporters weren’t happy with the rule that is in place about denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
To be fair, the double jeopardy rule does have it’s issues, and these two incidents on the same night highlighted that, and it’s something the rulemakers may want to take a look at and reassess.
However, one thing some fans weren’t best pleased about was the inconsistency in the usage of VAR.
Mike Dean went over to check the pitchside monitor for the Bednarek incident, while Craig Pawson did no such thing, and that’s something that has seemingly rubbed Arsenal fans up the wrong way.
