French comedian Baptiste Lecaplain has had a mini-rant on the subject of former Arsenal, current Crystal Palace striker Marouane Chamakh.
When Arsenal signed Marouane Chamakh in 2010 for absolutely nothing he arrived with a reputation for being ruthless in front of goal, powerful in the air and exceptional at bringing others into the game – he was for all intent and purposes the archetypal Premier League centre forward.
However his time at The Emirates was never a happy time.
The Moroccan spent the majority of his time in North London twiddling his thumbs on the bench – and after 67 games rendered just the 14 goals he was allowed to leave the club this summer for absolutely nothing.
Arsenal agreed to allow him a free transfer to Selhurst Park – where he signed a one-year-deal with Crystal Palace.
During his time at Arsenal he often cut a languid and disinterested figure – which angered the Arsenal fans who became equally disinterested in him.
But those fans have unusual company – in the form of a French comedian, who remains mad at Chamakh for entirely different reasons.
Baptiste Lecaplain is a French comic – perhaps comparable to Russell Howard if you are looking for a similar British comic – who also happens to be a devout Bordeaux fan.
He has been speaking to Le10Sport this week about his beloved club – and admits he is still angry with the Moroccan striker for leaving in 2010:
“Chamakh, he drove me crazy! The guy is trained in Bordeaux, he signed his first professional contract there, it becomes international, he won his first trophy then he goes for 0 euro? But what is his education? … Chamakh is a disgrace. He goes to the gel at Crystal Palace and that no more about it.”
Recently Crystal Palace fans have thawed to the lanky striker. He put in a workmanlike shift against Everton recently that really impressed the fans at Selhurst Park.
But for Arsenal fans the idea somebody could be so annoyed at Chamakh leaving their club is a foreign concept.
To them, him staying for so long is what really ticked them off!
