Fabrizio Romano has told AnfieldWatch that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are still interested in AS Monaco defensive midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni despite his preference to join Real Madrid.

The well-known and well-respected journalist has claimed that Liverpool have been in contact with Tchouameni’s agents for months and are still in discussions.

This despite Liverpool being fully aware that the 22-year-old France international defensive midfielder prefers a move to Real Madrid to a transfer to Anfield.

Liverpool stance on Aurelien Tchouameni

Romano told AnfieldWatch: “The club, on the other hand, has had contact with Aurelien Tchouameni’s agents for months.

“Discussions are frequent also these days, because Liverpool know that Tchouameni has given priority to Real Madrid, but the negotiations between the Spanish club and AS Monaco are still ongoing and will continue.

“Liverpool are waiting. PSG are also attentive to developments to understand how Real Madrid will use this advantage. This week will be very important for the Tchouameni deal.”

Could Anfield move happen?

In our view, Liverpool should not waste too much time on trying to persuade Aurelien Tchouameni to move to Anfield if he is keen on a transfer to Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

Sky Italia reported last week that Madrid have made an offer of €70 million (£59.64m) for the Frenchman, who is valued at €80 million (£68.16m) by Monaco.

So, if the newly-crowned European champions increase their offer and meet Monaco’s demands, then they would be able to sign Tchouameni.

Liverpool do have a very good midfield department, with the likes of Thiago and Fabinho at the top of their game.

Do Liverpool really need to sign another midfielder this summer?
