Speaking on the Sport Bible YouTube channel, Arsene Wenger has named Gilberto Silva as the most underrated player he ever managed at Arsenal.

Wenger was answering questions from fans and one supporter was keen to hear who Wenger thought was the most underrated player he’d managed.

The Frenchman’s spell at Arsenal saw him manage a number of underappreciated footballers including the likes of Lauren, Emannuel Petit, Laurent Koscielny and Tomas Rosicky, but Wenger says Silva is the most underrated he had.

What’s been said?

Wenger named the most underrated player he worked with at Arsenal.

“Gilberto Silva. He was naturally discreet. I remember when I bought him in 2002, he was in Japan at the World Cup and I looked at him and I thought you don’t do anything special, but whenever I thought who won the ball it was Gilberto Silva or who played this ball it was Gilberto Silva. I tried to buy him and after that he was in the invincibles but nobody speaks about him. He’s one of those players who you only see how much you miss them when they don’t play,” Wenger said.

What a player

As Wenger says, Silva never did anything special, but he was simply one of the most consistent performers the Premier League has ever seen.

He would rarely put a foot wrong and even when the team was underperforming you could rely on Silva to put in a 7/10 performance every single week.

Silva won’t go down as the greatest footballer to ever play in the Premier League, but he should certainly be remembered as an all-time great.
