Back in January, Newcastle were rejected by Donny van de Beek, who decided to leave Manchester United to join Everton on loan.
According to The Telegraph, the £40m man did so because of Newcastle’s position in the Premier League, as he didn’t fancy a relegation battle.
Now, in light of results since the January transfer window closed, Van de Beek’s decision seems to have backfired.
What’s the story?
Well, as things stand, Newcastle now look very comfortable, whereas Everton are the ones who find themselves in serious danger.
Under Eddie Howe, the Magpies have embarked on a phenomenal eight-game unbeaten run in the Premier League, which includes five wins.
It has taken Newcastle up to 14th with 28 points, putting them seven points clear of the relegation zone.

In Everton’s case, Frank Lampard has overseen a run of three consecutive defeats in the Premier League, which has caused the Toffees to plummet down to 17th – just one point above the bottom three.
Donny van de Beek should’ve joined Newcastle
Hindsight is, of course, a wonderful thing, although it goes without saying that Van de Beek should’ve joined Newcastle instead of Everton.
The Dutchman clearly didn’t have much faith in Howe or his ability to drag Newcastle to safety, although we’re not quite sure why he felt differently about Lampard.

In comparison to Lampard, Howe has far more experience in the Premier League, and it puzzles us as to why Van de Beek felt Everton were in a better position than the Magpies – especially given the funds on offer to Newcastle.
If Everton do end up dropping into the Championship, then perhaps Newcastle will make another move for Van de Beek this summer.
