Leeds fans have taken to Twitter to react after the club announced that Alfie McCalmont had joined Morecambe on loan for the 2021/22 season.
What’s the story?
Well, after thriving on loan with Oldham last term in League Two, the 21-year-old has secured himself a step up to League One.
McCalmont made 35 appearances for Oldham last season, scoring eight goals while also providing five assists from midfield.
As Transfermarkt shows, he displayed his impressive versatility by appearing in a defensive midfield role, as well as in attacking midfield.
McCalmont has been so impressive away from Elland Road that he’s even earned two caps for Northern Ireland.
Having made only two first-team appearances for Leeds, that is quite an achievement.
Leeds should’ve found a Championship loan

If we were to be critical, Leeds should’ve found McCalmont a loan move to a Championship club.
Even if he takes League One by storm, Marcelo Bielsa might view the step up from League One to the Premier League as too significant a jump.
If that is the case, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Leeds find him a Championship move for the 2022/23 campaign.

At that point, he’ll be 22. It would’ve been far more beneficial to get McCalmont involved in Championship football as early as possible.
He’s definitely good enough for that level, so it feels like Leeds may have underrated one of their own prospects here, in our view.
For now, let’s see what the Leeds fans on Twitter have been saying about the club’s announcement…
