The former Liverpool man named the best player he’s played with, the best player he’s ever played against, the funniest moment of his career and more.
Dirk Kuyt spent 6 years at Liverpool
In an interview with the Europa League, ex-Liverpool favourite Dirk Kuyt answered a number of questions regarding his 18 year long career ahead of Feyenoord’s game against Fenerbahce this evening.
The hard working, versatile and at times prolific Dutchman spent 6 years at Anfield, where he won one trophy. Starring for Liverpool for more than half a decade, Kuyt also played for the likes of Feyenoord and Fenerbahce, as well as winning 104 caps for the Netherlands.
As a result, the 36-year-old has played with and against some of the game’s finest, and that was reflected in his answers. As well as naming the finest player he played with and against, Kuyt also revealed his childhood heroes and favourite ground to play at.
Kuyt called Barcelona’s Nou Camp his favourite ground
Kuyt stated, “The best player I’ve ever played with is Steven Gerrard.” High praise indeed for the Liverpool legend, when one considers that Kuyt played alongside the likes of Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids and Ruud van Nistelrooy with Holland and Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso at Liverpool.
There were no surprises with the finest player Kuyt has played against, “The best player I’ve ever played against is Lionel Messi,” said the 36-year-old. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner will be more than a few players first thoughts when asked such a question.
Kuyt is also a fan of the ground Messi plays at with Barcelona, stating, “The best away match in Europe is against Barcelona, because I think they have the best stadium.”

Kuyt went on to discuss his sporting heroes, his first footballing memory and the funniest moment of his extensive career to date.
“My sporting heroes were Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard [and] my first footballing memory was the Dutch team winning the European Championship final in 1988.”
When asked if he could replay one game from his career, Kuyt picked the 2010 World Cup final which Holland lost to Spain.

When quizzed on the funniest moment of his career, on or off the pitch, Kuyt opted for another Liverpool memory.
“A funny moment, both on and off the pitch, was during my time with Liverpool. There was an incident between Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise with a golf club. The funny thing was that a couple of days later we won against Barcelona and Craig Bellamy scored the winning goal and celebrated it with a golf swing.”
Kuyt faces his former club Fenerbahce tonight with Feyenoord, having won their opening Europa League game against Manchester United 1-0.
