Espanyol’s sporting director Angel Gomez has told Radio Catalunya, as quoted by Diario La Grada, that he didn’t like the attitude of Pau Lopez before his move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Lopez, 21, featured in 36 league games for Espanyol last season, and even kept hold of the No. 1 jersey when the La Liga side chose to bring in Giedrius Arlauskis from Watford in January.

However, Espanyol received new investment from Chinese company Rastar Group, and snapped up Spanish stopper Roberto from Olympiakos to strengthen their options in goal.

Eventually, Lopez actually left the club on deadline day in August in order to reunite with Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham, who was Espanyol manager whilst Lopez was coming up through the ranks with the club.

Lopez has yet to make an appearance for Spurs, and is likely to spend his season-long loan deal as third choice goalkeeper behind veterans Michel Vorm and Hugo Lloris.

It’s therefore something of a curious move for Lopez, who has since been replaced by Espanyol after they signed Diego Lopez from AC Milan – and Espanyol’s sporting director Angel Gomez has commented on the move.

Speaking to Radio Catalunya and as quoted by Diario La Grada, Gomez suggested that manager Quique Sanchez Flores wanted two goalkeepers to battle for the No. 1 jersey, and that was supposed to be Roberto and Pau Lopez.

However, Gomez claims that Lopez then wanted to leave, and hinted that the shot stopper didn’t want to fight for his place as he added that he didn’t like the attitude displayed by Lopez before joining Spurs.

“Quique was clear, Roberto is a good goalkeeper and Pau was a youth product, and we were confident in their projection, so we understood that there was no headline goalkeeper,” said Gomez. “The coach, as usual, wanted the one he had more confidence in to be the starter, but after this Pau wanted to go. I did not like the position he took,” he added.
