Sunderland have completed the signing of Standard Liege talent Romaine Mundle just a matter of months after he left Tottenham Hotspur.

Sunderland secured the signing of Leeds United defender Leo Hjelde on Tuesday and have followed that up with a deadline day arrival.

Standard Liege talent Romaine Mundle has joined the club on a four-and-a-half-year deal until the summer of 2028.

HITC Football understands that the fee involved is around £2million with Sunderland investing in the former Tottenham Hotspur talent.

Mundle hails from London and came up in the Tottenham Hotspur youth ranks.

The 20-year-old never made a first-team appearance for Tottenham but was brought in around the first-team squad for training last season.

Mundle attracted Premier League interest as his contract ran down and he decided to leave the club for a move to Belgium with Standard Liege.

Mundle predominantly plays as a right-sided winger but made just six first-team appearance for Standard and is now heading back to England.

Sunderland are now delighted to have landed Mundle with sporting director Kristjaan Speakman celebrating the move.

Speakman has told Sunderland’s official website that he really didn’t think Mundle would be available to buy and ‘moved quickly’ to get him in.

Speakman is seemingly stunned that a deal was even possible having seen just how much interest he generated over the summer.

“Talented players like Romaine are highly sought after and we saw this first hand in the summer when he left Tottenham Hotspur. We didn’t anticipate him being available on a permanent basis, but when we sensed an opportunity, we moved quickly and decisively to make it happen – our ways of working and structure are a real strength in these moments.”

“This is an important step in Romaine’s career following a spell overseas and we look forward to helping him settle, as he makes Sunderland his new home. He’s got a bright future ahead of him as part of an exciting squad, and we look forward to working with him,” he added.

Mundle must now put a disappointing spell in Belgium behind him and kick on with Sunderland in order to fulfil the potential he showed with Tottenham.
