Peterborough United director Barry Fry believes the League One club could get around £5 million for Jonson Clarke-Harris after Rangers and Sheffield United scouted the red-hot striker, as he told Peterborough Live.

It seems that, with every year that goes by, the Posh seem to unearth another goal-scoring diamond.

Britt Assombalonga, Jack Marriott and Dwight Gayle all found the net at a remarkable rate during their time at London Road and, after selling Ivan Toney to Brentford last summer, Clarke-Harris has filled a sizeable void in some style this season.

The well-travelled centre-forward took his tally to 27 with a ruthless hat-trick in Saturday’s 7-0 thrashing of Accrington Stanley, as scouts working on behalf of both Rangers and Sheffield United frantically made notes from the sidelines.

As a result, Peterborough look set for another summer of intense speculation; regardless of whether or not they seal a return to the Championship.

After eking £10 million out of Brentford when Toney swapped the third-tier for the second, Clarke-Harris is all-but certain to earn Darren Ferguson’s side another tidy profit if he too heads for the exit.

“There were several Championship clubs chasing Jonson in January and Bournemouth were the most persistent. We had several offers for the player, but we turned them down flat, even though we could probably get five times what we paid for him,” Fry said of a man who joined Peterborough from Bristol Rovers for a fee in the region of £1 million.

“We want promotion this season so there’s no way we would have let him go.

“Rangers have been to a lot of our matches this season and they were there on Saturday. Sheffield United were also there, but West Brom weren’t.”

Interestingly, Rangers have also been linked with Clarke-Harris’s Peterborough teammate Siriki Dembele.

It is a credit to the strength in depth at Ferguson’s disposal that Posh hit Stanley for seven despite the injury-enforced absence of their most influential creator.
