Steven Gerrard’s Rangers and Neil Lennon’s Celtic have been linked with Ivan Toney in the summer transfer window.
Toney is one of the best strikers in the lower leagues in England, and there is no surprise to see that Rangers and Celtic reportedly want him.
After all, the former Newcastle United striker scored as many as 24 goals in League One and also provided five assists this past season, as reported on BBC Sport.
Celtic and Rangers interest
Peterborough director of football Barry Fry told The Daily Mail (print edition, page 79, June 9, 2020) that Old Firm rivals Rangers and Celtic want to sign Toney in the summer transfer window (click here to read more).
Fry said that he has had agents tell him that Rangers and Celtic are “very interested” in the striker.
The Scottish Sun also reported in June that Rangers and Celtic scouts have watched the 24-year-old striker in action.
Peterborough United promise
It seems that Rangers and Celtic will get the chance to sign Toney, with Fry now saying that the club made a promise to him that they will sell him if they do not get promoted to the Championship, which they did not.
While stating that Toney wanted to leave Posh in the January transfer window when there was interest from “higher-level clubs”, Fry told The Peterborough Telegraph: “He is a very professional young man and he thoroughly deserves a big move.
“We promised him we would let him go if we didn’t reach the Championship and we will stick to our word. Our stance might backfire on us a little with the fee we receive, but we remain confident it won’t.”
