Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur could face competition from the Bundesliga leaders if they pursue Sebastian Szymanski this summer with the Poland international potentially an option for Bayer Leverkusen.
That is according to Slawomir Czarniecki, a director who works behind the scenes at the Bay Arena.
With Szymon Syzmanski enjoying an impressive debut season over in Turkey with Super Lig challengers Fenerbahce, speculation linking the former Feyenoord man with a move to one of Europe’s major leagues on the rise.
Turkish publication Star Gazetesi reported a few weeks ago that Spurs are keeping a very close eye on the £30 million-rated attacking midfielder.
And, when the subject of Spurs’ alleged interest was put to Czarniecki, the Leverkusen chief admits that Szymanski’s form has not gone unnoticed at Xabi Alonso’s as-yet unbeaten league leaders either.

Tottenham face Bayer Leverkusen battle
“Our scouting department knows Sebastian,” Czarniecki tells Weszlo. “As in the case of (Wolfsburg’s Jakub) Kamimski, we were and are in contact with his surroundings.
“We are preparing for the fact that, after such a good season, there may be a few departures. We don’t know in what positions, but Szymanski could potentially be considered.”
With a staggering 12 goals and 14 assists this season, Szymanski could potentially be handed the unenviable task of stepping into Florian Wirtz’s shoes. That’s if the Leverkusen wonderkid becomes European football’s latest £100 million-plus player. HITC Football understands that scouts working for Liverpool and Manchester City watched Wirtz run the show on Saturday.
Leverkusen hammered title rivals Bayern Munich 3-0 to move five points clear.
Leverkusen admit Sebastian Szymanski interest
“It’s not up to me to decide whether (Szymanski) would eventually go to Leverkusen,” adds Czarniecki, who looks after the youth sides rather than the first-team.
“But I can say that we know him well. Looking at how Szymański performs in Turkey, he is prepared to play (for a big team).”
Tottenham’s own interest may be with the potential departure of Gio Lo Celso in mind. Despite a brief resurgence during James Maddison’s injury-enforced absence, the Argentine is one player Spurs may look to move on in the summer. Especially with his contract expiring in 18 months time.
Lo Celso has missed Spurs’ last few games with an injury of his own.
Interestingly, Brentford looked at Szymanski back in 2022. Thomas Frank’s side identified him as a potential successor for the ex-Tottenham favourite Christian Eriksen.
