Football director Fabio Cordella has said that Tottenham are well in the race to sign AC Milan superstar Rafael Leao, with the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City also chasing the winger.

Speaking to CalcioMercto, the former Saint-Gilloise and Honved official claimed that Spurs had entered the competition to sign the 23-year-old Portuguese international, with Leao regarded by many as one of the best players in Italy and a key reason behind Milan’s title win last season.

The attacker has been heavily linked with a move away from the San Siro in recent weeks, with Corriere della Sera recently reporting that Chelsea were leading the race to sign Leao, with City and Liverpool in the mix for the former LOSC Lille forward.

With a release clause worth €150m (£130m) according to AC Milan Info, the Rossoneri will likely only allow Leao to leave in 2023 for this transfer fee given that the attacker is so key to Stefan Pioli’s long-term plans at Milan, with this fee something Tottenham are unlikely to match to sign the youngster.

Indeed, Premier League interest is at an all-time high for Leao, and according to Cordella, the Italian believes that Tottenham are now in the race for the winger in what could be a bombshell statement from the former Lanciano manager.

Cordella said: “There are prestigious clubs where a young boy like Leao can marry a cause and make history like Totti at Roma while moving only for the money may not happen. There are clubs that have offered even ten million a year to Leao. Saying Chelsea is not silly, but there are other English clubs on him, including Tottenham.”

Tottenham’s reputation has increased in recent years following their move to their new stadium and last year’s appointment of Antonio Conte, yet even with all these factors in play, signing Leao feels nothing more than a fantasy for the north London club.

With Heung-min Son and Harry Kane likely to remain at the club well into their thirties, signing Leao makes little financial or tactical sense for Tottenham despite the winger’s incredible potential. Moreover, other areas of the squad need some much-needed work in 2023, such as the goalkeeper and central midfield positions.
