The Dutch striker nearly headed to Romania in 2015.

Much has been made in recent weeks of Tottenham Hotspur summer signing Vincent Janssen’s struggles in front of goal.

The Dutchman arrived at Spurs this summer in a big money move from AZ Alkmaar. Prior to his time in the Dutch Eredivisie he had been a goalscoring regular at lower league side Almere City in the Netherlands.

In another world, Janssen might have in fact ended up playing in Romania.

That is according to the former Dinamo Bucharest sporting director Dinu Gheorge. He is quoted by DigiSport as having this to say about Janssen nearly joining the club in 2015:

“Dinamo lost a player extremely valuable last summer. Janssen, who plays in the Dutch National team.

“He played in the second league in that moment, contracts and already talk to him. He had no pretensions very great for that player is today, but was not.

“He wanted somewhere to 12,000 Euros salary per month and it was impossible to give salary this, and the first installation.

“At present he is the starting striker for the Dutch national.”

It appears that Dinamo could have got hold of the player, had they unbuttoned the purse-strings slightly in pursuit of his signature.

Who knows that that might have meant for the player, who instead joined AZ and went on to score 31 goals in 49 appearances for the club and make his Netherlands debut.

Spurs will no doubt be wondering if they have signed a player from the Romanian league given his current form. Janssen remains without a goal from open play for Tottenham and his poor form in front of goal is becoming increasingly concerning for the club.
