The Hammers have struggled so far in the Premier League this season, but scored a last-minute winner in the EFL Cup in midweek.
West Ham United star Dimitri Payet has told the club’s official website that the last-gasp win against Accrington Stanley in the EFL Cup in midweek can be a turning point in their season.
It looked as though the Hammers’ frustrations were going to continue on Wednesday night against League Two opposition until Payet curled home a superb free-kick in the sixth minute of injury time to give his side the win.
That will have come as a huge relief to players, manager, and supporters alike after what has been a hugely disappointing start to the season.
The Hammers have lost four of their opening five games of the Premier League, beating only Bournemouth, and have suffered consecutive 4-2 defeats to Watford (from 2-0 up) and West Brom.
However, the dramatic and euphoric nature of the winner against Accrington could serve as a catalyst for a change in fortunes, and Payet insists it can prove to be a turning point.
The French star told whufc.com: “I am working hard on all aspects of my game. On Saturday, I hit the post with the free-kick and yesterday, it went in. The goal helped us a lot and makes us feel a lot better because it meant we avoided extra-time and another 30 minutes of football. It will be great for our confidence.
“Sunday’s game against Southampton is of course one that we can win and we will be doing all that we can to do so and to take the victory at home.
“We know that we are in need of points, but we are at home and I think that the last-minute victory against Accrington will have helped us mentally and will have boosted our confidence and I hope that we will see that on the pitch on Sunday.”
