West Ham United talisman Dimitri Payet has caused a storm on Twitter after hinting he wants to leave the club.

Payet, who was substituted during the Hammers’ 2-0 defeat to Manchester United on Monday, was left out by Slaven Bilic for the visit of Manchester City to the London Stadium in the FA Cup on Friday night.

The Hammers were embarrassingly thrashed 5-0 and Payet was brought on for a late cameo with the score at 4-0.

He has faced criticism this season for not reaching the same levels which earned him the reputation as one of the best players in Europe last term.

West Ham have struggled too and sit 13th in the top flight at the halfway stage, a far cry from their magnificent farewell season at Upton Park which saw them record their best ever Premier League points tally.

Payet has been linked with a return to France with former club Marseille, with recent reports claiming he has already been convinced to rejoin his old side.

And just when Bilic thought things could not get much worse, his star player has caused a storm on Twitter by fueling speculation he wants to leave just hours after the final whistle in the 5-0 humiliation.

Payet liked a tweet from a Marseille fan written in French which said: “4-0 for City, Payet on the bench, West Ham flowing in PL, it’s time to return home @dimpayet17 #TeamOM.”

The tweet instantly picked up hundreds of comments after Payet liked it.

The playmaker’s actions are unhelpful in the extreme to a club which gave him the platform to showcase his talent to the world and pay him handsomely to do so.
