The goalkeeper was reportedly set to join Aston Villa in January.
It is nearly a month to the day since Dimitar Sheytanov posted a picture of himself with the Aston Villa assistant manager, John Terry, on Instagram.
Alongside it, Sheytanov, the young Bulgarian goalkeeper linked with a January transfer to Villa Park, wrote: “What a legend … it’s been a pleasure to meet you personally, take advice and talk to you. The feeling to be next to one of the best players in England ever, one of the best defenders in the world and person who has achieve a lot in football is more than amazing !!!”
And in a separate post three days later, he added: “Big things gonna happen under the sky”.
It appeared to verify reports Sheytanov was set to become an Aston Villa player [Sportal], despite having spent part of the summer on trial at Leeds United.
However, no such move was ever announced and – publicly, at least – there has been nothing since then to suggest any further link between the 19-year-old and Villa.
That is until today, when Sheytanov posted the following comment on Orjan Nyland’s Instagram injury update.
However, his situation remains largely unclear. While it is not uncommon for clubs not to announce development squad additions, Sheytanov’s Transfermarkt profile continues to list him as ‘without club’ after leaving Levski Sofia on 1 January.
It is perhaps one to keep an eye on over the next few months.
Although one thing is for certain – Sheytanov would have his work cut out at Aston Villa, whose goalkeeping pool already includes Nyland, Lovre Kalinic, Jed Steer, Mark Bunn and Matija Sarkic.
