The former Tottenham Hotspur ace proved to be a resounding success in north London.
Ex-Spurs star Dimitar Berbatov sat down for an exclusive interview with ESPN, and shared his reaction to being told that Tottenham were interested in signing him 11 years ago.
The now 36-year-old proved to be nothing other than a quite brilliant success story during his time in north London, following his £10.9 million switch from Bayer Leverkusen in 2006, thrilling the Spurs faithful with his intricate style of play.
The Bulgarian scored 46 goals for the Lilywhites, during a two-year spell at White Hart Lane, before moving on to join Manchester United on transfer deadline day in 2008.
And Berbatov explained how he didn’t even know who Spurs were when his agent informed him of their interest in signing him way back in 2006, when speaking exclusively to ESPN:
“My agent said we’d had a serious offer from Tottenham. I said: ‘Who?’ I was watching German football, not English. There were rumours of Man United’s interest too. I’d definitely heard of United, but they told me I was effectively a second choice if another player didn’t happen. So I took the offer to move to London, which I loved, and play for Spurs, who I grew to love.”

Berbatov went on to become a Premier League legend during his time in England, winning two Premier League titles with the Red Devils, although he owes a lot to Tottenham, for providing him with the platform to showcase his true talent to the world, and what an exceptional talent he was.
