Timo Werner assisted on his Tottenham Hotspur debut as Ange Postecoglou’s side recorded a 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The on-loan RB Leipzig star was thrown straight into the deep end and handed a start by his new manager.

Even before a ball was kicked, there was a massive spotlight on the Tottenham new boy because of his previous spell at Chelsea and how things didn’t work out, even though he won the Champions League.

Dimitar Berbatov made it clear that, from his perspective, he would be ‘happy’ with what Timo Werner produced in his first outing for Spurs, as he told Premier League Productions (14/01/24 at 7:00 pm).

Ange Postecoglou decided to deploy the speedster on the left flank and Dimitar Berbatov spoke about how he had at least two chances to score.

One effort, in particular, was a left-footed shot, when he was put through from the left channel, but his shot was nowhere near the target.

It also needs to be noted that Timo Werner has only made two starts this term, so it’s even more understandable if he is a little rusty.

Timo Werner’s Tottenham debut

“In my mind, I would be happy with his performance,” said Berbatov.

“He was keeping the ball, giving it to his teammates and he was looking for space by trying to create something.

“To be honest he had two, I am not going to say great opportunities to score, but two good opportunities. But he didn’t score. One with his left foot. He needs to work on his weak side.

“But, overall, for his first game for Spurs. I think he was okay.”

Positive signs from Timo Werner

It’s a very healthy start from the German and he will only get better as he builds up his fitness and sharpness again.

Given that the likes of Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison are missing for Spurs, when they return, it will, more than likely, put Werner on the bench.

That will help the player because the spotlight isn’t on him as much as it was at Stamford Bridge.

And the onus is on others, such as Son when he returns from national duty, to score the goals.
