The Tottenham Hotspur ace has been heavily linked with an exit this summer.
Dimitar Berbatov sat down for an exclusive interview with the Daily Star, and suggested that Tottenham ace Christian Eriksen needs to think long and hard about joining Real Madrid this summer.
The 27-year-old joined Spurs from Ajax in the summer of 2013, for around £11.5m according to BBC Sport, and he has gone on to be a real hit in north London.
Eriksen has just over 12 months remaining on his current deal with Tottenham, however, and his future in north London is far from certain.
Spanish media outlet AS claims that the Denmark international has already verbally agreed to join Real Madrid this summer.
It would make sense from a business perspective for Tottenham to sell Eriksen this summer, if he fails to agree terms on a new deal, but Berbatov told the Daily Star why the 27-year-old should give serious thought about leaving the Lilywhites for Madrid:
“Eriksen needs to ask himself if he would be happy there. Look at Gareth Bale. He left Spurs for Real Madrid and has won everything. But he still gets criticised, even though he scored so many unbelievable goals there. Eriksen will ask himself this question. He will be thinking: ‘Will I be happy there?’ He’s going to be sitting at home thinking about it and his head will spin. I think Spurs is the right place for him. I want him to stay.”
Berbatov does make an interesting point. The pressures to succeed at Madrid can destroy a player. Eriksen might just be better served in signing a new deal with Tottenham, and seeing out his career in north London.
