Dilan Markanday has completed a permanent move from Tottenham Hotspur to Blackburn Rovers. The talented attacker has told Blackburn’s website why he chose to leave Spurs – penning a contract until 2025.
Markanday, 20, made his first-team debut in the Europa Conference League this season. But the attacker was only handed a substitute appearance and that was as good as it got. Despite 17 goal involvements in 14 PL2 games.
He has since chosen to join Tony Mowbray’s Blackburn – signing a three-and-a-half-year contract. A move to the promotion hopefuls is expected to see Markanday massively improve his first-team game time.
Blackburn do have Ben Brereton-Diaz in supreme form, but have lost Ian Poveda to a long-term injury – the loanee returning to parent club Leeds. He spoke of his decision to leave Tottenham, and why it was an “easy decision”.
“Hearing of the interest, it was hard to turn down the opportunity. It really was an easy decision to make and a journey that I can’t wait to start. I had a taste of first-team football with Tottenham this season. I wanted more.
“It was a difficult decision to leave after nine years but the opportunity to come here and help the team was just too big. The right time to get out of my comfort zone, seek first-team football. Take that next step in my career.”
Markanday joining Blackburn could leave Tottenham filled with regret
Tottenham have let one of their most-exciting talents go. Now, Antonio Conte is not renowned for giving younger players a chances – but Markanday is a proper talent, his form in Premier League 2 is proof.
As is, why Blackburn – a club that could well be in the Premier League next season – have decided to chance their arm on Markanday. Tottenham could really regret losing him, if he hits the ground running at Ewood Park.
