Jack Wilshere has admitted that it’s really difficult to understand Mikel Arteta’s reasoning with regards to Arsenal star Mesut Ozil.
The former Germany international has been making headlines as of late after the Arsenal boss left him out of his revised Premier League squad last week.
Given that the Gunners have only scored four goals in their last six games across all competitions, you could argue that the Spanish coach is enduring problems with creativity right now.
Arteta has insisted throughout the Ozil saga that the decision is linked with football reasons, amid suggestions that he has been left displeased with the 32-year-old’s application in recent months.
And Wilshere, who played alongside the former Real Madrid maestro for five years in North London, has admitted that he’s struggling to grasp the idea of him being left out, claiming he’s one of the best players that he has worked with.
He told Sky Sports: “I’ve said it before about Mesut, I have played with him and he is one of the best players I have played with. All I can do is comment on him as a footballer and I know what he can give, so it does make it difficult to understand, but at the same time, I’m not at the club and I don’t know what’s happened.”
If Arsenal lose away to Manchester United – who won 5-0 last night – on Sunday then it’s a problem for Arteta.
The more they struggle to score goals, the more scrutiny the former Manchester City assistant will find himself under.
Even with Ozil, Arsenal have been suspect down the years, but a playmaker of his talent is certainly more of an asset than a liability.
