Speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has been discussing Newcastle United and what some agents within the game have been doing during this transfer window.
The Magpies are one of the clubs making the most headlines this summer as they look to splash the cash after their high-profile takeover in late 2021.
However, sadly, their new-found status as the richest club in the world has seen them at the centre of a lot of speculation, and according to Edwards, a lot of this has been driven by agents.
Indeed, the reporter states that a lot of footballing intermediaries are actively using Newcastle’s name to get their clients new contracts or drive up transfer fees.
What’s been said?
Edwards spoke about how agents are using Newcastle.
“It isn’t so much about what they are trying to do, it’s about filtering through all of the rumours. What I have found difficult is that agents are throwing Newcastle’s name in if they want their clients to get a new contract or if they agree a fee with a club a club are saying ‘Newcastle are interested’ to bolster the asking price,” Edwards said.

Easy tactic
Unfortunately for Newcastle, this is an easy way for agents to drive a harder bargain in any negotiations, and the most difficult thing is that almost every rumour regarding Newcastle is believable.
Indeed, the Magpies are more than capable of a blockbuster signing such as Bruno Guimaraes, but they’ve also completed signings such as Chris Wood and Dan Burn.
United cast an extremely wide net in terms of targets and that means that any agent can use Newcastle’s name with any client in order to drive up the price of their clients or earn them a higher wage.
