Speaking to SportBible, Phil Foden has named Arsenal U18 coach and former player, Jack Wilshere, as one of the players he idolised growing up.
At the age of just 22, Foden has grown up watching some of the most talented players England has ever produced. The likes of Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and David Beckham were all starring during his childhood, but he says Wilshere is one player who truly caught his eye.
Foden says that Wilshere’s style of play was different to any English player he’d seen before and that he absolutely adored the Arsenal star as a kid.

Foden loved Wilshere
The Man City ace spoke about the Arsenal coach.
“There are so many great players, man. I loved Jack Wilshere when he was playing for England. His playing style was different to any English player that I’d seen before.
“I used to like [Frank] Lampard as well, how he used to arrive late to the box and score a lot of goals.
“I used to love Joe Cole as well, his playing style. It was players like that who were creative and knew how to score.”
Should be teammates
Quotes like this just show how harsh the footballing gods have been to Jack Wilshere.
Foden is starring at the 2022 World Cup speaking about Wilshere as though he’s a long-retired veteran a la Frank Lampard or Joe Cole. The reality is that Jack Wilshere is 30 years old.
The likes of Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker and Jordan Henderson are all older than Wilshere and are in the England squad, while Wilshere is a retired coach these days.
Injuries ruined what could have been one of the most promising and exciting England careers of all-time.
Wilshere should be Foden’s teammate, not his favourite former player.
